Repair costs and replacement choices

Repair or replace

Decide whether to repair or replace your appliance by comparing the diagnosed fault, complete costs and practical benefits of each option.

Compare the full costs before choosing.

Can you compare repair and replacement without a diagnosis?

Only provisionally: a symptom such as no heat does not establish the failed part or the complete repair cost. A diagnosis can turn a guess into a defined repair option with parts and labour requirements. Until that is known, compare possible costs cautiously rather than assuming the cheapest suspected part is the answer.

Compare total repair and replacement costs

Compare the assessment and repair terms with purchase, fitting, any necessary adaptations and disposal. Ask what is included in the quote and whether further work needs approval. No standard price or percentage rule can substitute for the actual options in front of you.

Check condition, parts and household needs

Consider condition, previous faults, parts availability, capacity and suitability for the household. Age is one factor, not a universal cut-off. A recent appliance may still need a careful cost comparison, while an older one may have a reasonable repair option.

What replacement costs are easy to overlook?

Delivery, fitting, removal of the old appliance and any necessary installation changes can add to the purchase price. Dimensions and access also matter, especially for integrated appliances. Compare complete, confirmed costs and the practical downtime of each option before choosing a replacement.

Get the missing diagnosis or quote

Identify the missing information: diagnosis, parts availability, a full repair quote or a fitted replacement price. Obtain it before deciding. An enquiry should clarify the assessment process and charges; it does not automatically authorise all subsequent repair work.

Useful to know

Common questions

Does appliance age alone justify replacement?

No. Age is a starting fact, not a diagnosis. A written repair quote gives a firmer basis for deciding than an assumed lifespan.

What if a part is unavailable?

Ask whether it is temporarily out of stock or discontinued, and whether an approved alternative exists. That distinction affects both waiting time and repair feasibility.

How should I compare a repair quote with the full replacement cost?

Compare like-for-like totals. Check whether VAT, return visits, fitting and disposal are included where applicable, rather than comparing a parts estimate with a fitted replacement.
